In Ayurveda, detoxification is considered key in helping to protect the health of the body as a sum of all its parts. Detoxification is vital for good health and is considered the key to longevity. With panchakarma treatments, a variety of ailments can be eliminated from the body but a precise system of treatment must be used which includes the five treatments and a special panchakarma diet.
These are the five parts of detoxification:
Vamana - This is a treatment that seeks to induce vomiting. It works to remove the Kapha toxins that are located in the respiratory tract. It is believed these toxins lead to asthma, allergies, chronic indigestion, chronic congestion, and skin disorders. This daily treatment loosens the toxins and helps eliminate them from the body through coughing or vomiting.
Virechana - This is a purifying treatment that is effective in removing Pitta toxins. These accumulate in the liver and gallbladder. This treatment safely and effectively cleanses the entire gastrointestinal tract. Those who go through this treatment see improvement in skin disorders, joint disorders, Herpes outbreaks, diabetes, asthma, and a variety of other conditions.
Basti - This bowel treatment is considered the very most important. It works to cleanse all of the accumulated toxins from all doshas including the Vita, Kapha, and Pitta. This treatment is typically given over a period of several days, depending on a person's medical condition.
Nasya - This treatment involves the administration of special medicinal oils into the nasal cavities. This treatment removes toxins from the head and neck and is typically administered over a period of thirty days. It helps with headaches, premature graying, loss of taste and smell, and a variety of other ailments that involves the head and neck.
Raktamokshana - This form of treatment is not recommended for every person and is meant to cleanse the blood of toxins. Many centers do not offer this type of cleansing because it can be risky.
Many people wonder what is panchakarma and how can it benefit their health. Unfortunately, the world is full of toxins and human beings absorb them from the air, food sources, and even water. Purification is vital for a person's health and should be carried out often. Most experts agree it is a good idea for individuals to have these treatments carried out at least twice a year. The treatments may need to be carried out more often for those with serious diseases.
